Dear New Latino Movement friends, The clock is ticking… with less than nine months leftbefore election day, we’d like to invite you to actively support our mission of helping engage, train, empower and connect progressive Latinos! In November of 2008, Barack Obama urged people to host community service events the weekend before his Inauguration. Inspired by working with amazing young (and young-at-heart) Latinos nationwide during the 2008 election cycle, we responded to our new President’s call to action by planning a Latino Political Training Day that drew 100 people from 18 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. We –like many of you – wanted to make sure the progress we saw in our communities lasted beyond that historic November victory. Since that first training, NLM has evolved into a national network spanning over 30 states – with nearly 1,500Facebook supporters, nearly 4,000 Twitter followers and several hundred others in our LinkedIn group and email lists. We actively organized online and on-the-ground around important issues like: The Nomination of Supreme Court Justice SoniaSotomayor, Latino participation in the 2010 Census and local elections, Comprehensive immigration reform, and the Dream Act. We work to play a role in strengthening the progressive Latino political pipeline… Creating a resume bank and sharing progressive job notices. Hosting networking events with Democratic allies.
The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere, dating from 1619. From that time to this never, ever, not once has a person of Hispanic origin been a member of that august body. There have been no Latino State Senators or Delegates in the entire history of Virginia state government. This startling fact came to light at the candidate forum celebrated by the local chapter of the ‘New Latino Movement’ at El Puerto Restaurant on Thursday, July 27th. Presently there are two Northern Virginia candidates who are very clearly and definitively Hispanic running for office in each of the two chambers. In these dog days of summer it’s difficult to focus on a primary for state races in Virginia. Nevertheless, in a county which is majority Democrat, the winners of the Democratic primary on August 23rd have a clear shot at victory in November. Jaime Areizaga Soto, community advocate and defender of worker’s rights in the county, is running for the 31st district seat in the State Senate against a well know Arlingtonian woman by the name of Janet Favola. Ms. Favola has enormous name recognition, experience and the backing of the entire Democratic establishment [...]

Contributed by Ivan Rosales, from San Bernardino, California — a member of the California Dream Network featured in the White House’s Ten Reasons We Need the DREAM Act blog. Senator McCain of Arizona was once a strong supporter of immigration reform- and indicated his commitment to fighting for young immigrants like us. Today, his position is the complete opposite- he no longer supports us, and will not even take the time to meet with us. On the day we visited his office- we were strongly committed to getting a positive response from the Senator. I am a fourth year biology student and would love to one day become a doctor in the Army before becoming a cancer researcher. I have a strong desire to help others- and to serve my country. I thought that Senator McCain- who is an admired war hero- would understand my desire to serve this country. At one point Senator McCain left the office through a side door- I ran after him. “Senator McCain, I am ready to serve my country,” I yelled after him. “Will you support the DREAM Act?” He did not address me nor my fellow Dreamer who had a similar message. On September 14th, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) announced that the DREAM Act would be raised for a vote as an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill, stating: “We are also offering an amendment to pass the DREAM Act. This amendment will ensure that millions of children who grow up as Americans will be able to get the education they need to contribute to our economy. Students who come to America before age 16 and who have been here for five years should be able get their green card after they go to college or serve in the military. And many who have volunteered to defend our country can finally become citizens of it.” (see statement) On September 15th, President Barack Obama confirmed his support for the bill, stating: “There’s no reason why it shouldn’t receive that same kind [...]

Dear Arlington community members and neighboring friends, This past week Arlington made history by being one of the first counties in the United States to pass a resolution to opt-out of the so called “Secure Communities” program. As a resident of Arlington and the chair of the Arlington Human Rights Commission, the resolution was a moment to cherish. Our County Board took a strong stand to ensure fairness, safety and justice for all people in our community. They made the right decision to ask to opt-out of the so called “Secure Communities” program. In the last couple of days County Board members have received a number of negative responses from the community organized by the anti-immigration forces from the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The County Board needs to hear the voices of our community members who want to preserve our diversity and believe all of us deserve real community safety. We need to show our Board members that we support their stance against the so called “Secure Communities” program. Please take 10 minutes to send an email to the County Board members thanking them for their courage and action. You can send one email to them all at countyboard@arlingtonva.us, or even better, take the time to send a personal note to each member.
The DNC is actively seeking voter protection volunteers, particularly those who speak Spanish. Given the difficulty often faced by non-native English speakers at the polls and prospects of right-wing suppression tactics at the polls, it is all the more important to make sure that voter protection is strong this year. With so many close races across the country, it’s absolutely crucial that we get volunteers to the polls, watch for trouble and protect everybody’s Constitutional right to vote. Despite having to stand in long lines in the rain to enter DAR Constitution Hall, hundreds of energized supporters were thrilled to be at the concert, which began with remarks by DNC Chairman Governor Tim Kaine, Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe, and other great young leaders. Then, with chart-topping hits like “Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes”, B.o.B.’s got the crowd moving with a great set of songs. Leading up to the event, B.o.B.’s appearance at the concert was the talk of the town in articles by dozens of outlets including The Washington Post, theboombox.com, hiphopwired.com, Politico, and rapradar.com. After the event, B.o.B. called this concert the most memorable of his career. But of course, it was President [...]
